Rain forced the SA20 2024 opening match to be called off before a ball was played, leaving fans dissatisfied. However, they were treated to a run-fest in the second match between MI Cape Town (MICT) and Durban Super Giants (DSG), despite rain making a cameo in the end. Heinrich Klaasen’s masterpiece led to a thrilling thriller at Kingsmead, Durban, where Super Giants prevailed by 11 runs using the DLS system.
Cape Town was put to bat after losing the toss and amassing a huge 207-5 in 20 overs. They were off to a flier with Ryan Rickelton going nuts at one end. Rassie van der Dussen and the wicketkeeper batsman put together an 82-run partnership for the first wicket. With two quick wickets, Super Giants were able to take a lead, but Rickelton was performing admirably.
All the other hitters could not stay at the crease for an extended period of time save Rickelton. But in the end, they scored more than 200 because to some devastating hits from captain Kieron Pollard (31* off 14) and batsman Liam Livingstone (25 off 20 balls). With the exception of Keemo Paul’s 2/31, DSG’s bowling department did not learn any important lessons..
Super Giants lost two wickets early on and were off to the worst possible start when chasing a total of 208. Within the first three overs, Quinton de Kock, the opener, and Wiaan Mulder were both out for easy runs. They were reduced to 52/3 when Keemo Paul and Matthew Breetzke attempted to rebuild the innings, but the former was sent packing immediately following the powerplay. After a few overs, Nicholas Pooran was dismissed for 38, and the opening batsman was removed for 39 in the eleventh over. But MICT was still in the game with Klaasen out there. The South African wicketkeeper batsman was removed in the 16th over after scoring an explosive 85 from 35 balls. He ensured his team’s safety and that they finished far ahead of par.
