Former India off-spinner R. Ashwin has backed experienced fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar for a return to the national setup, saying the veteran should be considered as India plans its squad for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin said India would benefit from having an experienced seam bowler alongside its emerging pace attack. He stressed that Bhuvneshwar's recent performances and fitness make him a strong candidate for another opportunity with the national team.
Experience Still Matters
Ashwin believes major tournaments require a balance between youth and experience. While India has invested in several young fast bowlers, he said an experienced campaigner such as Bhuvneshwar could provide valuable control with the new ball and composure in pressure situations.
Strong Domestic Form
Bhuvneshwar has impressed in domestic cricket and the IPL, consistently demonstrating his ability to swing the new ball and deliver at the death. Ashwin pointed to those performances as evidence that the seamer remains capable of competing at the highest level.
Selection Decision Still Ahead
Bhuvneshwar last featured in India's ODI side in 2022, and no decision has been made regarding his return. However, Ashwin's comments have added to the discussion over how India should shape its bowling attack in the lead-up to the next 50-over World Cup.
Whether the selectors revisit the experienced pacer remains to be seen, but Ashwin believes Bhuvneshwar deserves serious consideration as preparations for 2027 continue.
