India strengthened their grip on the second Test against Sri Lanka after declaring their first innings at 503/9 at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo. Dhruv Jurel produced the headline performance with a brilliant unbeaten 115, while Devdutt Padikkal also made a valuable century as India built a huge first-innings total.
Sri Lanka then had a difficult start to their reply, losing two wickets for just 8 runs before bad light brought an early end to play. The hosts now face a massive 495-run deficit heading into the third day.
Dhruv Jurel delivers a memorable century
Dhruv Jurel played one of the most important innings of India's first innings. Coming in at No. 7, the wicketkeeper-batter remained unbeaten on 115 runs and helped India push beyond the 500-run mark.
Jurel showed tremendous patience before gradually increasing the scoring rate. His century was his second Test hundred and came during a crucial lower-order partnership with Rishabh Pant.
Jurel's innings was particularly important because Sri Lanka had already picked up several Indian wickets and were hoping to finish the innings quickly. Instead, India's lower order turned the match firmly in their team's favour.
Devdutt Padikkal’s century sets the foundation
Before Jurel took centre stage, Devdutt Padikkal scored 117 runs, providing India with one of the key contributions of the innings.
Shubman Gill also added 50, while Rishabh Pant played an aggressive knock of 63 runs. Pant and Jurel put together a crucial 112-run partnership, frustrating the Sri Lankan bowling attack and taking India towards a commanding total.

Sri Lanka suffer an early setback
Sri Lanka's response could hardly have started worse.
India's bowlers immediately put pressure on the hosts, with Prasidh Krishna and Manav Suthar taking a wicket each. Sri Lanka finished the shortened innings at 8/2 after 3 overs, with Kamil Mishara unbeaten on 5.

India in a commanding position
At the end of Day 2, India had done almost everything they could have hoped for. A total above 500, a century from Jurel and two early wickets have put Sri Lanka under enormous pressure.
The hosts now need a major batting effort to reduce India's advantage. India, meanwhile, will look to take the remaining Sri Lankan wickets quickly and put themselves in an even stronger position to push for victory.
The first Test of the series had already gone India's way, with India leading 1-0. Their performance in Colombo has now given them a strong opportunity to take an unassailable lead in the series.
