South Africa are hopeful Kagiso Rabada will return for the second Test against Australia as they look to bounce back from a heavy defeat in Durban.
The second Test begins on October 18 at St George’s Park in Gqeberha, with Australia leading the three-match series 1-0 after winning the opening match by 214 runs. Rabada missed the first Test while recovering from a hamstring injury.
Rabada Closing In on Comeback
South Africa captain Temba Bavuma has offered an encouraging update on Rabada’s fitness. The fast bowler has been bowling during the first Test and remains in contention for the next match, subject to medical clearance and final selection.
Rabada’s return would strengthen South Africa’s pace attack and give the hosts an experienced option alongside Marco Jansen. However, his place in the playing XI has not yet been confirmed.
South Africa Consider Changes
South Africa have also adjusted their squad following the defeat in Durban. Matthew Breetzke has replaced Tristan Stubbs, while Ryan Rickelton is expected to take over wicketkeeping duties.
Breetzke could feature in the top order as the Proteas look to improve their batting. Tony de Zorzi remains unavailable as he continues to recover from a hamstring injury.
Australia Hold the Advantage
Australia dominated the opening Test, securing a 214-run victory. Matt Renshaw played a major role with a score of 190, while Josh Hazlewood took six wickets in South Africa’s second innings to help seal the result.
South Africa will need a stronger batting performance to challenge Australia and level the series. Rabada’s possible return could provide a timely boost, but the hosts must also build partnerships and put more pressure on the visitors.
The second Test runs from October 18 to 22 in Gqeberha. South Africa will be aiming to level the series before the third Test in Cape Town later this month.
