Matt Renshaw's 190 Rescues Australia Against South Africa in 1st Test

Matt Renshaw produced a career-defining innings to lift Australia from early trouble against South Africa in the opening Test at Kingsmead, Durban. The left-handed batter scored 190 as Australia recovered from a top-order collapse to post 390 in their first innings on Day 2.

South Africa reached 27/1 at stumps, trailing Australia by 363 runs with nine wickets remaining. The hosts will look to build a substantial partnership on the third day, while Australia's bowlers will aim to make further inroads. <Cite refs={["turn319520view0","turn319520view1"]}/>

Renshaw Ends Long Wait for Test Century

Renshaw's innings was the defining moment of Australia's batting effort. Promoted to No. 5 following a late change to the batting order, the Queenslander showed patience and discipline against a demanding South African pace attack.

His century was his second in Test cricket, arriving almost a decade after his first. Renshaw had last reached three figures in the format against Pakistan in 2017. His latest performance demonstrated his ability to adapt to a different role and shoulder responsibility when Australia needed stability.

The innings was particularly significant after Renshaw had recently made progress in limited-overs cricket. His approach at Kingsmead combined careful shot selection with the willingness to capitalise on scoring opportunities.

South Africa's Bowlers Strike Early

Australia's innings began poorly after captain Pat Cummins elected to bat. Nic Maddinson was dismissed for a duck by Marco Jansen, while Travis Head departed for nine.

Marnus Labuschagne scored 37 before Wiaan Mulder trapped him leg before wicket. Steve Smith made 25, including two sixes, but fell to Jansen shortly after lunch.

Anrich Nortje then removed Alex Carey and Beau Webster in the same over, leaving Australia in serious trouble at 124/6. Nortje's return to Test cricket after more than three years added further significance to his contribution.

Renshaw initially found support from Cummins, who scored 33 during a valuable recovery partnership on the opening day.

Australia Look to Build Pressure

After Australia were dismissed for 390, South Africa lost an early wicket and ended the day at 27/1. The hosts remain well behind, but their remaining batting line-up has an opportunity to narrow the deficit.

The opening Test is part of Australia's tour of South Africa, with further matches scheduled in Gqeberha and Cape Town.

Renshaw's innings has given Australia a competitive position after a difficult start. The next phase will depend on whether their bowlers can exploit the conditions and prevent South Africa from building a strong first-innings response.
