India captain Shubman Gill had an injury scare during the team’s training session in Thiruvananthapuram on Friday, two days before the opening ODI against West Indies.
Gill was struck on his right elbow by a rising delivery from Mohammed Siraj while batting in the nets. The incident briefly brought his practice session to a halt as the India medical staff attended to him. Siraj and Virat Kohli were also seen checking on the captain following the blow.
Gill subsequently spent some time away from the nets before returning later in the session. He faced throwdowns during the closing stages of practice, providing some encouragement ahead of the first match.
There was no immediate official confirmation that the injury would prevent Gill from playing in the series opener. His fitness is expected to be assessed by the team management before the playing XI is finalised.
India will begin their three-match ODI series against West Indies on September 27 at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram. The second ODI will be played in Guwahati on September 30, while the series will conclude in New Chandigarh on October 3.
Gill will lead an India squad that also includes experienced campaigners Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. The series forms part of India’s preparations for the next phase of their ODI programme, with the 2027 World Cup remaining an important long-term focus.
Gill’s availability is particularly significant for India given his role as captain and a key figure in the batting order. The final decision on his participation will depend on how he responds after the elbow blow and the assessment by the team’s medical staff.
The focus will now remain on Gill’s fitness as India complete their final preparations for the opening ODI.
