Steve Smith Reaches 11,000 Test Runs Against South Africa

Steve Smith has added another landmark to his outstanding Test career, becoming the 12th player in history and the third Australian to score 11,000 runs in Test cricket during the second Test against South Africa at St George’s Park in Gqeberha on Wednesday.

Smith reached the milestone on Day 4 when he collected a single off Marco Jansen in the 40th over of Australia's second innings. The right-handed batter joined two Australian greats, Ricky Ponting and Allan Border, in an exclusive group of players to have crossed the 11,000-run mark in the longest format.

Ponting remains Australia's leading Test run-scorer with 13,378 runs, while Border finished his career with 11,174. Smith's achievement further underlines his consistency and longevity at the highest level of international cricket.

Smith Adds Another Milestone to Remarkable Career

Since making his Test debut in 2010, Smith has developed into one of the defining batters of his generation. His unconventional technique, concentration and ability to score runs against high-quality bowling have made him a central figure in Australia's Test side for more than a decade.

Smith's journey from a leg-spinner who initially batted in the lower order to one of Australia's most accomplished Test batters remains a notable part of his career. His ability to adapt his game and produce substantial scores across different conditions has helped him establish an impressive record.

Reaching 11,000 Test runs places Smith among the format's most prolific batters and adds another significant achievement to a career that already includes major international honours.

Australia Under Pressure Against South Africa

The milestone came during a difficult innings for Australia. South Africa had declared their first innings at 425 for nine, built around a commanding 179 from captain Temba Bavuma, alongside important contributions from Marco Jansen and Simon Harmer.

Australia struggled in reply and were reduced to 96 for eight at 40.4 overs, trailing by 329 runs at the time shown in the scorecard.

Smith was dismissed for 28 off 88 deliveries, including four boundaries and two sixes, after reaching the landmark. Wiaan Mulder bowled him in the 41st over, ending his resistance as South Africa continued to press for victory.

Although Smith's innings could not prevent Australia's batting struggles, the milestone provided a significant moment in an otherwise challenging day for the visitors.

At 11,000 Test runs, Smith has further cemented his place among Australia's greatest batters. His latest achievement is a reminder of the sustained excellence required to succeed in the most demanding format of international cricket.
