SuperSport Takes Dig at Australia With Sandpapergate Jibe Ahead of SA vs AUS Tests

South African broadcaster SuperSport has brought back memories of Australia's infamous Sandpapergate scandal with a pointed social media post ahead of the upcoming Test series between South Africa and Australia.

SuperSport shared a promotional message on X, stating, “Our cameras will be sharp for this 3-match Test series.” Accompanied by a camera emoji, the post appeared to reference the 2018 ball-tampering controversy that remains one of the most talked-about incidents in modern cricket.

The remark quickly attracted attention as Australia prepared to return to South Africa for a Test series, renewing a rivalry shaped in part by the events of eight years ago.

SuperSport's Post Revives Sandpapergate Memories

The reference points to Australia's 2018 tour of South Africa, when the visiting team became embroiled in a ball-tampering scandal during the third Test at Newlands in Cape Town.

Television footage showed Australian batter Cameron Bancroft using sandpaper to alter the condition of the ball. The incident triggered widespread criticism and led to significant disciplinary action against three members of the Australian team.

Then-captain Steve Smith and vice-captain David Warner received 12-month suspensions from international and domestic cricket under Cricket Australia's sanctions. Bancroft was handed a nine-month suspension.

The controversy damaged Australia's reputation and prompted a wider debate about sportsmanship, leadership and the standards expected in international cricket.

SuperSport's latest post has revived those memories just as the two teams prepare to meet again on South African soil.

Australia Return to South Africa for Test Series

The upcoming series marks Australia's return to South Africa for Test cricket following their controversial 2018 tour.

The opening Test is scheduled to take place at Kingsmead in Durban, followed by the second match at St George's Park in Gqeberha. The series will conclude at Newlands in Cape Town, the venue associated with the Sandpapergate incident.

The choice of Newlands for the final Test adds another historical dimension to the contest, although both teams will be keen to keep their attention on the cricket.

With valuable World Test Championship points at stake, the series represents an important opportunity for both sides to strengthen their positions in the 2025–27 cycle.

Pat Cummins and Shukri Conrad Address the Controversy

Australia captain Pat Cummins played down questions surrounding the 2018 scandal, indicating that the incident belonged to the past.

South Africa head coach Shukri Conrad has also emphasised that his team's primary objective is to beat Australia on the field rather than allow the controversy to dominate the series.

However, the history between the sides could remain a talking point among supporters, particularly when the teams meet at Newlands.

Focus Turns to Cricket

South Africa and Australia enter the series with strong ambitions in Test cricket. South Africa will look to make the most of home conditions, while Australia will aim to demonstrate their quality in challenging away conditions.

SuperSport's post has added an extra layer of interest to the build-up, reminding fans of an episode that continues to shape discussions about Australia's cricketing history.

Ultimately, the teams will have the opportunity to move beyond the controversy and create new talking points through their performances across the three Tests.
