Temba Bavuma produced a captain’s knock of the highest order, scoring an unbeaten 142 to lead South Africa’s recovery against Australia on Day 3 of the second Test at St George’s Park in Gqeberha on Tuesday.
Having resumed at 97/5, South Africa faced the prospect of another difficult day after Australia’s fast bowlers dominated the rain-affected opening stages. Instead, Bavuma combined composure with determination to turn the contest around, guiding the hosts to 343/7 by the later stages of the day.
Bavuma Leads the Fightback
Bavuma’s innings was built on patience, sound judgement and an ability to absorb pressure. With wickets falling around him on Day 2, the South African captain had already shown resistance by reaching stumps unbeaten on 41.
He carried that determination into the third day, gradually taking control as the batting conditions improved under brighter skies. Australia had made life difficult for South Africa with disciplined seam bowling, but Bavuma refused to allow the innings to unravel.
The century was his fifth in Test cricket and his first against Australia, making the achievement particularly significant in a match where South Africa desperately needed a substantial contribution from their captain.
Harmer Provides Crucial Support
Simon Harmer played a valuable supporting role, remaining unbeaten on 37 as the pair put together an important partnership. Their stand helped South Africa recover from 110/6 and build a much more competitive total.
Earlier, Marco Jansen had counter-attacked with an impressive 85, helping change the momentum after Mitchell Starc struck early in the morning session. Jansen’s aggressive approach complemented Bavuma’s measured innings and prevented Australia from maintaining the pressure they had established on the second day.
Scott Boland continued to pose a threat for Australia, adding to his strong performance from the previous day. However, South Africa’s middle and lower order showed greater resilience as the pitch became more favourable for batting.
South Africa Shift the Momentum
Australia entered the second Test holding a 1-0 lead after winning the series opener in Durban by 214 runs. South Africa therefore needed a determined response to keep the contest alive and avoid falling further behind.
Bavuma’s unbeaten century has given the hosts renewed belief and placed greater responsibility on Australia’s bowlers to finish the innings. With Harmer alongside him, South Africa have turned a precarious position into an opportunity to put pressure back on the visitors.
The remaining overs of the innings will be important. South Africa will aim to add as many runs as possible, while Australia will look for a breakthrough to prevent the hosts from establishing a decisive advantage.
For Bavuma, this innings is more than a personal milestone. It is a statement of leadership under pressure and a timely reminder of his value to the Proteas in Test cricket.
At the close of the reported session, South Africa were 343/7, with Bavuma unbeaten on 142 and Harmer on 37.
