India produced one of the most memorable run chases in ODI history on October 16, 2013, defeating Australia by nine wickets after chasing down a formidable target of 360 in Jaipur.
Thirteen years ago, Australia piled up 359 for five in 50 overs in the second ODI at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium. India responded with a spectacular batting display, reaching 362 for one in just 43.3 overs to level the seven-match series at 1–1.
The victory was powered by Rohit Sharma’s unbeaten 141, Shikhar Dhawan’s 95 and Virat Kohli’s blistering century off just 52 balls.
Australia Post 359 After Strong Top-Order Contributions
Australia’s innings featured substantial contributions from across the top order. Aaron Finch scored 50, while Phillip Hughes made 83 and Shane Watson added 59.
Captain George Bailey remained unbeaten on 92 from 50 deliveries, and Glenn Maxwell contributed a rapid 53 off 32 balls. Australia finished at 359 for five, setting India a target of 360.
At the halfway stage, the visitors appeared well placed to take a 2–0 series lead. India, however, had other plans.
Dhawan and Rohit Provide a Flying Start
India’s opening pair immediately put pressure on the Australian bowlers. Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan added 176 runs for the first wicket, giving the chase a strong foundation.
Dhawan played an aggressive innings of 95 from 86 balls, striking 14 fours. His dismissal, caught by Brad Haddin off James Faulkner, briefly gave Australia hope.
That opening partnership had already brought India within striking distance, but the most explosive phase of the chase was still to come.
Virat Kohli’s 52-Ball Century Changes Everything
Virat Kohli joined Rohit and launched a remarkable counterattack. He reached his century in only 52 deliveries, setting a new record at the time for the fastest ODI hundred by an Indian batter.
Kohli finished unbeaten on 100 from 52 balls, hitting eight fours and seven sixes. Rohit, meanwhile, continued his composed assault and remained unbeaten on 141 from 123 deliveries, including 17 fours and four sixes.
The pair added an unbroken 186 runs for the second wicket, taking India past the target with 39 balls remaining.
India finished at 362 for one in 43.3 overs, completing a nine-wicket victory that stunned Australia and levelled the series.
