About Nepal Cricket Team

The Nepal cricket team has emerged as one of the most closely followed Associate nations in international cricket. Representing a country where cricket has grown rapidly in popularity, Nepal has built its reputation through passionate supporters, talented players and a series of significant milestones on the international stage.

Governed by the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN), the national team competes in One Day Internationals (ODIs) and Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is), alongside regional tournaments and ICC qualifying competitions. Nepal’s progress reflects years of development, from its early participation in international tournaments to appearances at major global events.

History of Nepal Cricket

The Cricket Association of Nepal was established in 1946, while the country became an ICC member in 1988. Nepal began competing in international cricket through regional competitions before gradually advancing through the ICC World Cricket League structure.

A major breakthrough came in 2010, when Nepal won the ICC World Cricket League Division Five tournament. Continued progress through international qualifying events strengthened the team’s position among emerging cricket nations.

Nepal reached a landmark in 2014 by qualifying for the ICC World Twenty20 in Bangladesh. The tournament marked the country’s first appearance at a senior ICC global event and introduced Nepal’s players to a wider international audience.

Another important achievement followed in 2018, when Nepal secured ODI status through the ICC World Cricket League Division Two competition. The team subsequently made its ODI debut against the Netherlands in August that year.

Major International Achievements

Nepal’s qualification for the 2023 Asia Cup was another defining moment. The team earned its place after winning the ACC Men’s Premier Cup, setting up matches against established cricket powers India and Pakistan.

Nepal also qualified for the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, returning to the global stage after a decade. Although the team did not advance beyond the group stage, the tournament provided valuable experience against leading international sides.

These appearances have helped Nepal build a stronger international identity while increasing interest in domestic cricket and the development of young players.

Key Players and Team Strengths

Nepal has produced several players capable of influencing matches with both bat and ball. Leg-spinner Sandeep Lamichhane has been a prominent figure in the team’s bowling attack, while all-rounder Dipendra Singh Airee offers versatility across formats.

Captaincy responsibilities have changed by format. Sandeep Lamichhane was appointed Nepal’s ODI captain in August 2026, while Rohit Kumar Paudel has also played an important leadership role for the national side. Stuart Law was appointed head coach in March 2025.

The team’s strengths include spin bowling, energetic fielding and an increasingly confident batting unit. Consistency against experienced opponents remains important as Nepal seeks to progress in international competitions.

The Future of Nepal Cricket

Nepal’s next stage of development depends on maintaining competitive performances, improving player depth and gaining experience against stronger opposition. ICC qualifying events provide opportunities to challenge established teams and pursue further tournament appearances.

With an enthusiastic supporter base and a growing pool of emerging talent, Nepal remains an important developing force in international cricket. Continued investment in coaching, domestic competitions and infrastructure will be central to turning its promising progress into sustained results.

For Nepal, the ambition is clear: compete more consistently at the highest level and establish a lasting presence in international cricket.
