Amelia Kerr Appointed New Zealand Captain Across All Formats Ahead of Zimbabwe Series

New Zealand Cricket team has confirmed a new era in women’s cricket leadership, appointing Amelia Kerr as captain of the national side in all three formats. The 25-year-old all-rounder steps into the role following Sophie Devine’s decision to retire from One-Day Internationals after the 2025 World Cup and relinquish T20I captaincy duties.

Kerr’s first series as full-time skipper will be at home, where New Zealand are scheduled to host Zimbabwe in both ODI and T20I contests later this month.

A Proven Performer With Experience

Kerr has been a central figure in the White Ferns setup since her debut in 2016. Over the years, she has developed into one of the side’s most dependable players with both bat and ball.

In 50-over cricket, she has featured in more than 80 matches, scoring over 2,300 runs at an average above 40 while also collecting over 100 wickets. In the T20 format, her impact has been equally significant, with over 1,400 runs and nearly a hundred wickets to her name, combined with tight bowling control.

Her consistency and versatility have made her one of New Zealand’s most valuable multi-format cricketers.

Leadership Roots in Domestic Cricket

Kerr is not new to captaincy responsibilities. She has led Wellington Blaze in New Zealand’s domestic circuit, guiding the side to consecutive Super Smash titles across the last two seasons. Those campaigns strengthened her reputation as a composed and tactically aware leader.

Her appointment reflects the team management’s desire for continuity as the White Ferns begin a new competitive cycle.

Kerr’s Vision for the Team

Speaking after the announcement, Kerr emphasized unity and collective growth. She highlighted the importance of connection within the squad and maintaining strong relationships on and off the field. For her, leadership is not about status, but about encouraging teammates and fostering belief within the group.

Backing From the Coaching Staff

Head coach Ben Sawyer expressed confidence in Kerr’s readiness for the responsibility. He described her as a respected figure within the dressing room and someone who understands the culture and expectations of representing New Zealand.

The squads for the upcoming Zimbabwe series will be confirmed soon, with the T20I matches set to begin in Hamilton.

With Kerr at the helm, New Zealand enter a fresh chapter built on stability, experience, and long-term vision.
