Mumbai Indians Release Lasith Malinga, Two Other Coaches Ahead of IPL 2027

Mumbai Indians have announced the departure of former Sri Lanka fast-bowling great Lasith Malinga, along with coaches Paras Mhambrey and Carl Hopkinson, as the franchise reshapes its coaching setup ahead of the 2027 Indian Premier League (IPL) season.

The five-time IPL champions confirmed the development on October 29, thanking all three members of the men’s team coaching staff for their contributions and service to the franchise. The announcement marks another significant change in Mumbai Indians’ backroom structure ahead of the upcoming campaign.

Malinga remains one of the most influential figures in Mumbai Indians’ history. During his playing career, the right-arm fast bowler spearheaded the franchise’s attack and played a key role in four IPL title-winning campaigns, as well as the team’s 2011 Champions League T20 triumph.

After retiring from playing, Malinga continued his association with the franchise in mentoring and coaching roles. He returned as Mumbai Indians’ fast-bowling coach ahead of IPL 2024, succeeding Shane Bond.

Paras Mhambrey also shared a long association with the franchise, serving from 2010 to 2017 before returning to the setup in 2024. Carl Hopkinson joined Mumbai Indians ahead of the 2025 season, bringing experience from his work with England’s men’s team and focusing on fielding standards.

The departures come shortly after Mumbai Indians appointed Kieron Pollard as head coach, replacing Mahela Jayawardene. The franchise is now preparing for a fresh start after finishing ninth in the IPL 2026 standings.

Mumbai Indians have not yet announced replacements for the departing coaches. Their next appointments will be closely watched as the franchise looks to rebuild its coaching structure and return to title contention in IPL 2027.
