Australia fast bowler Darcie Brown has been ruled out of the entire Women's Big Bash League (WBBL) 2026 season after failing to recover sufficiently from a back injury, dealing a setback to Adelaide Strikers ahead of the tournament.
The 23-year-old was diagnosed with a disc injury after returning from Australia A's tour of India last month. Brown featured in two T20 matches and one one-day game during the tour, taking three wickets for 39 runs in the second unofficial ODI against India A in Mohali.
The injury subsequently ruled her out of Australia's ODI series against Bangladesh and the T20I series against New Zealand.
Cricket Australia Confirms Brown's Absence
Cricket Australia had initially hoped Brown would recover in time to feature in the second half of the WBBL campaign. She underwent a period of reduced workload to allow the injury to recover before gradually returning to training.
However, a subsequent assessment revealed that the fast bowler was not ready to resume training, leaving insufficient time to regain full fitness before the tournament.
Cricket Australia confirmed that Brown would miss the upcoming season, which runs from October 29 to December 5.
Her absence is a significant setback for Adelaide Strikers, who will be without one of their key pace-bowling options for WBBL|12.
Strikers coach Luke Williams acknowledged the impact of losing Brown but highlighted her importance to the squad beyond her on-field contributions. He said her experience, professionalism and leadership would continue to benefit the group throughout the campaign.
Focus Shifts to Recovery
Despite the setback, Brown could still target a return to international cricket in the coming months. Australia's plans for the inaugural Women's T20 Champions Trophy in India in February 2027 could provide a potential target, depending on her recovery and subsequent selection.
Brown has represented Australia in all three international formats and remains an experienced option in the country's pace attack.
For now, her priority will be recovering from the back injury and rebuilding her workload before returning to competitive cricket. Adelaide Strikers will need to adjust their bowling plans as they prepare for the new WBBL season.
