Afghanistan defeated Zimbabwe by 37 runs in the first T20I at Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Tuesday, October 27, to take a 1β0 lead in the three-match series. Ijaz Ahmadzai scored his maiden T20I half-century, while Rashid Khan delivered an all-round performance to help Afghanistan defend their total of 177.
Zimbabwe won the toss and elected to field, hoping to restrict Afghanistan to a manageable score. However, Afghanistan's middle-order contributions and aggressive late hitting helped them post a competitive total before their bowlers took control of the chase.
Ijaz Ahmadzai Leads Afghanistan's Batting Effort
Afghanistan lost wickets regularly during their innings but recovered through valuable contributions from Ijaz Ahmadzai, Shahidullah Kamal and Rashid Khan.
Ijaz Ahmadzai top-scored with 52 off 20 balls, recording his maiden half-century in T20 internationals. His innings provided Afghanistan with much-needed momentum after an early loss of wickets.
Shahidullah Kamal added 46, building an important partnership with Ijaz to strengthen the innings. Rashid Khan then provided a late boost with an explosive 30 off just 10 deliveries.
Despite the late acceleration, Zimbabwe's bowlers continued to take wickets, with Afghanistan eventually bowled out for 177 in 19.5 overs.
Afghanistan Bowlers Restrict Zimbabwe
Zimbabwe needed 178 runs to win but struggled to build sustained partnerships against Afghanistan's bowling attack.
Fazalhaq Farooqi led the attack with three wickets for 13 runs, putting Zimbabwe under pressure with an economical spell. Rashid Khan claimed two wickets for 20 runs, while Mujeeb Ur Rahman took two for 27 and Azmatullah Omarzai finished with two for 39.
Zimbabwe's batters found it difficult to maintain the required scoring rate as Afghanistan kept taking wickets at crucial moments. The visitors were eventually bowled out for 140 in 19.1 overs, handing Afghanistan a 37-run victory.
Rashid Khan Named Player of the Match
Rashid Khan was named Player of the Match for his contribution with both bat and ball. His quickfire 30 helped Afghanistan reach a competitive total, while his two wickets strengthened the team's defence.
The victory gives Afghanistan a 1β0 lead in the three-match T20I series. Their combination of middle-order runs and disciplined bowling proved decisive in the opening contest.
What's Next?
Afghanistan will look to extend their lead when the teams meet in the second T20I. Zimbabwe, meanwhile, will need a stronger batting performance and better partnerships if they are to level the series.
With Rashid Khan leading from the front and Afghanistan's bowlers delivering at key moments, the hosts have made a positive start to the T20I leg of the tour.
