Bhuvneshwar Kumar Makes India T20I Comeback After Four Years

Veteran fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar has earned a surprise recall to India’s T20I squad after nearly four years away from international cricket.

The 36-year-old seamer has been selected for India’s upcoming five-match T20I series against New Zealand, which is scheduled to begin on October 22, 2026.

Bhuvneshwar last represented India in a T20I against New Zealand in November 2022. His return comes after two productive IPL seasons with Royal Challengers Bengaluru, where his experience and control with the new ball made him an important part of the bowling attack.

Strong IPL Form Earns Bhuvneshwar a Recall

Bhuvneshwar's recent IPL performances played a major role in bringing him back into the national setup.

Across the 2025 and 2026 IPL seasons with Royal Challengers Bengaluru, the experienced pacer claimed 45 wickets. His 2026 campaign was particularly impressive, with Bhuvneshwar taking 28 wickets at an economy rate of 7.95.

His ability to swing the new ball, maintain tight lines and bowl effectively during the powerplay remains one of his biggest strengths.

Those qualities could be particularly useful in New Zealand, where conditions can provide assistance to seam bowlers.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s India Comeback

Bhuvneshwar has been one of India's most successful white-ball fast bowlers over the past decade.

His ability to move the ball both ways and control the scoring rate made him a regular member of India's limited-overs teams. However, injuries and increasing competition for places eventually kept him away from the international setup.

His latest recall gives him an opportunity to add another chapter to his India career.

With several younger fast bowlers now competing for places, Bhuvneshwar's experience could provide India with an additional option during the New Zealand series.

Shreyas Iyer will continue as India's captain, while Tilak Varma has been named vice-captain.

A Notable International Comeback

Bhuvneshwar Kumar's return is one of the more notable selection stories in Indian cricket in 2026.

Once a regular member of India's white-ball bowling attack, the veteran pacer has spent almost four years away from international cricket. His recent performances in the IPL have now opened the door for another opportunity with the national team.

Interestingly, Bhuvneshwar's last T20I appearance also came against New Zealand in November 2022. His return to the international stage against the same opposition would therefore add another interesting element to his comeback story.

At 36, Bhuvneshwar will bring considerable experience to an otherwise evolving Indian T20I bowling group. His ability to swing the new ball and deliver economical spells could prove valuable in New Zealand.

For the fast bowler, the series represents an opportunity to show that his skills remain effective at the highest level. For India, it provides another experienced option as the team continues to build its T20I combination.
