Australian cricket has said goodbye to one of its most unpredictable and entertaining match-winners. Glenn Maxwell has announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing the curtain down on a career that delivered explosive batting, remarkable fielding, valuable off-spin and some unforgettable performances in the green and gold.
The 38-year-old confirmed his decision on The Final Word cricket podcast on November 2, 2026. Having already retired from One-Day International cricket in June 2025, Maxwell has now called time on his T20 International career as well. He is also stepping away from first-class and List A cricket for Victoria.
However, the announcement does not mean the end of Maxwell's playing career. He intends to continue featuring in franchise T20 cricket, including for the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League (BBL).
Why Has Glenn Maxwell Announced His Retirement?
Maxwell's decision comes after discussions with Australia's team management about the direction of the national T20 side following the 2026 T20 World Cup.
Australia are looking towards the next generation of players, with opportunities expected to open up as the team builds towards future international tournaments, including the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Maxwell acknowledged that the conversations with team management had been open-ended and that there was no pressure on him to retire. However, with younger players being given opportunities, he recognised that the time had come to move on.
He also indicated that managing his body, particularly his knee, had become an important consideration. Rather than pushing himself through another international campaign, Maxwell wants to preserve his fitness for the remaining tournaments of his career.
His final appearance for Australia came against Oman at the 2026 ICC Men's T20 World Cup. He finished that match with figures of 2/13 from three overs and was not required to bat.
Glenn Maxwell's International Cricket Career in Numbers
Maxwell represented Australia in 286 international matches across all three formats. His career included seven Tests, 149 ODIs and 130 T20Is.
Across those appearances, he scored 7,226 international runs and took 136 wickets, establishing himself as a valuable all-rounder in Australia's white-ball teams.
Glenn Maxwell's international career statistics:
Tests: 7 matches
ODIs: 149 matches, 3,990 runs
T20Is: 130 matches, 2,897 runs
International centuries: 10
International wickets: 136
Major titles: Three ICC World Cups
His T20I record was particularly impressive. Maxwell scored 2,897 runs at an average of 28.97 and a strike rate of 154.42, with five centuries. He shares the record for the most T20I hundreds with India's Rohit Sharma.
His highest T20I score was an unbeaten 145 from 65 balls against Sri Lanka in Pallekele in 2016, an innings that demonstrated the extraordinary range of his attacking game.
The 2015 and 2023 World Cup Triumphs
Maxwell's international career was closely connected to Australia's success in major tournaments.
He was part of Australia's 2015 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup-winning team on home soil. Eight years later, he played another important role as Australia lifted the 2023 ODI World Cup in India.
The 2023 tournament produced two of the most memorable performances of his career.
Against the Netherlands, Maxwell smashed a century from just 40 deliveries, setting a new record for the fastest hundred in men's Cricket World Cup history at the time.
But it was his performance against Afghanistan at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium that became a defining moment in his career.
Australia were in serious trouble at 91/7 while chasing 292. Maxwell, battling severe cramps and struggling to move freely, produced an extraordinary unbeaten 201 from 128 balls.
He struck 21 fours and 10 sixes, combining with captain Pat Cummins for an unbeaten 202-run partnership for the eighth wicket. Australia eventually reached their target with three wickets remaining, completing one of the most remarkable victories in World Cup history.
The innings was more than a display of power hitting. It showed Maxwell's ability to adapt, manage pressure and find a way to win when the match appeared almost beyond Australia's reach.
A Match-Winner in T20 International Cricket
Maxwell's value to Australia extended well beyond his ODI achievements. His unconventional stroke play and ability to score quickly made him one of the most dangerous batters in T20 international cricket.
He could attack spin, find boundaries in unusual areas and change the direction of a match within a few overs. His off-spin also provided Australia with a useful bowling option, while his athletic fielding added another dimension to his contribution.
He was part of Australia's 2021 T20 World Cup-winning campaign in the UAE, where the team defeated New Zealand in the final. Maxwell scored the winning runs alongside Mitchell Marsh as Australia secured their first men's T20 World Cup title.
With five T20I centuries, he leaves the format as one of its most prolific century-makers at international level.
No International Farewell at the MCG
Maxwell admitted that he had held a small hope of receiving a farewell appearance at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, but understood Australia's decision to focus on younger players.
The upcoming home T20I series against England had been a possible opportunity, but he ultimately chose not to extend his international career.
For Australian supporters, the absence of a final home appearance may feel like an understated ending for a player who provided so many extraordinary moments. Nevertheless, Maxwell has made clear that he understands the team's priorities and is grateful for the opportunities he received.
Glenn Maxwell to Continue Playing in the Big Bash League
Although his international career is over, Australian cricket fans will still have opportunities to watch Maxwell in action.
He is expected to continue playing for the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League. The franchise has him contracted through the end of the 2027β28 season.
His immediate focus will be on managing his knee and preparing for the next phase of his T20 career. Maxwell's experience, power hitting and ability to influence games remain valuable qualities in franchise cricket.
For the Melbourne Stars, retaining a player of his experience and match-winning ability will be important as they continue their pursuit of a maiden BBL title.
The End of an Unforgettable Australian Career
Glenn Maxwell's international career was never conventional. He was a player who could turn a match around with a few extraordinary overs, produce shots that seemed impossible and deliver under pressure when Australia needed him most.
From three ICC World Cup victories to his unforgettable 201* against Afghanistan, his career featured moments that will remain part of Australian cricket history.
Maxwell leaves international cricket with 286 appearances, 7,226 runs, 136 wickets and three major ICC titles. More importantly, he leaves behind a legacy as one of the most exciting and distinctive all-rounders to represent Australia.
The international chapter of the 'Big Show' has come to an end, but his cricketing journey is not over. The Melbourne Stars and Big Bash supporters can still look forward to seeing him entertain crowds in the years ahead.
