Joe Root Signs New England Contract Until September 2028

England batter Joe Root has signed a new two-year central contract that runs until September 30, 2028, securing his place in the national setup for the next two years. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced its men's central contracts for the 2026–27 season, with Root among 11 players awarded two-year deals.

The agreement provides continuity for one of England's most experienced batters as the team prepares for a demanding international schedule. Root remains a key figure in England's Test plans, with his consistency and ability to score runs making him a central part of the batting order.

Root's pursuit of Sachin Tendulkar's record for the most runs in men's Test cricket will also remain a major talking point. Tendulkar retired with 15,921 Test runs, the highest total in the format's history. Root's chances of challenging that mark will depend on his form, fitness and longevity at the international level.

The ECB's announcement covers 30 centrally contracted players and nine England Development contract holders. Harry Brook, Jofra Archer and Jacob Bethell are among the other players whose contracts run until September 2028.

Root's new deal reflects England's commitment to retaining its established performers while planning for the future. It also gives the experienced batter the opportunity to continue adding to his Test record and strengthening his standing among the game's leading run-scorers.

Whether Root can eventually overtake Tendulkar remains to be seen, but his contract ensures he has the opportunity to keep pursuing that milestone as part of England's plans through September 2028.
