Karun Nair produced a determined unbeaten half-century to keep Karnataka in contention for a draw against Andhra in their opening match of the 2026–27 Ranji Trophy season at Mulapadu, Vijayawada.
Karnataka reached 176/4 in their second innings at stumps on Day 3, taking a 32-run lead after conceding a first-innings deficit of 144. Nair remained unbeaten on 81, while R Smaran was 21 not out as the visitors attempted to secure a draw heading into the final day.
The experienced batter’s innings proved crucial after Karnataka suffered an early collapse in their second innings. Mayank Agarwal was dismissed for 18, while KL Rahul managed just one run. KV Aneesh also fell cheaply, leaving Karnataka struggling at 43/3.
Karun Nair Leads Karnataka's Fightback
Nair responded with patience and controlled aggression, rebuilding the innings alongside Manvanth Kumar. The pair added 94 runs for the fourth wicket, giving Karnataka a much-needed platform after their difficult start.
Manvanth contributed 44 before losing his wicket to Lalith Mohan. Nair continued to hold the innings together, reaching his half-century and keeping the scoreboard moving against Andhra's bowling attack.
Smaran then joined Nair at the crease, and the pair helped Karnataka move into a position from which they could realistically save the match.
Andhra Take First-Innings Advantage
Earlier, Karnataka were dismissed for 274 in their first innings. Andhra responded with 418, securing a substantial lead of 144 runs.
Seeram Rahul led Andhra's batting effort with a century, scoring 119. His innings helped the hosts build a strong total and put Karnataka under pressure heading into their second innings.
Karnataka spinner Shikhar Shetty claimed six wickets for 115 runs, but Andhra's total left the visitors needing a determined batting performance to avoid defeat.
Final Day Holds the Key
Karnataka will look to extend their lead and preserve their remaining wickets on the final day. Nair's presence at the crease offers experience, while Smaran's support could prove important in frustrating Andhra's bowling attack.
Andhra, meanwhile, will aim to break the partnership early and create an opportunity to push for victory.
With six wickets remaining and a slender lead of 32 runs at the close of Day 3, Karnataka still have considerable work ahead. Nair's innings has kept their hopes alive, but the final day's play will determine whether the visitors can complete the recovery and secure a draw.
Score at stumps, Day 3: Karnataka 176/4 in the second innings, leading Andhra by 32 runs.
