In a major transition for Indian cricket, senior batters Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma stepped away from Test cricket just before the demanding series against England. India, led by the newly appointed Test captain Shubman Gill, battled through the tour and finished with a 2-2 draw. The squad featured several fresh faces, making the result commendable given the circumstances.
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar later reflected on the situation, acknowledging that the experience of Kohli and Rohit would have been valuable, especially in challenging English conditions. Speaking to NDTV, Agarkar emphasised the contributions of both veterans and noted that they had taken their decisions with full clarity.
He mentioned that the start of a new World Test Championship cycle played a role in their choice to step away, as both players felt unsure about committing to the demanding two-year schedule. While Agarkar admitted that the selectors would have preferred having their experience during the England series, he also expressed satisfaction with how the younger group handled the pressure.
When asked whether the selectors had tried convincing the two senior players to reconsider, Agarkar chose not to reveal details, simply stating that some conversations are best kept private.
India now shifts focus to limited-overs cricket, preparing for the three-match ODI series against Australia beginning October 19. The series will also see the return of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to international action for the first time since March.
