Kumar Kushagra has earned his maiden India ODI call-up after being named in the squad for the final two matches of the five-match ODI series against New Zealand. The 21-year-old wicketkeeper-batter from Jharkhand has attracted attention through his performances in domestic cricket.
His selection marks an important milestone in his career. Kushagra has been included as a backup wicketkeeper-batter to Ishan Kishan for the fourth and fifth ODIs, scheduled for November 13 and 15.
Kumar Kushagra’s List A Career in Numbers
Kushagra has played 40 List A matches, scoring 1,387 runs, including two centuries and 10 half-centuries. These numbers underline his experience in the 50-over format and his ability to contribute in different match situations.
His domestic performances have helped him emerge as a player to watch, with the India call-up representing a significant step forward in his career.
Recent Performances Strengthen His Case
Kushagra has also produced notable performances in multi-day cricket. Representing East Zone in the Duleep Trophy final against South Zone, he scored 101 in the first innings and followed it with 46 in the second.
He also impressed for India A against Australia A in an unofficial Test, scoring 113 in the first innings and an unbeaten 46 in the second. His contribution earned him the Player of the Match award.
These performances have added to his growing reputation and strengthened his credentials as a young wicketkeeper-batter capable of competing at a higher level.
What His India Selection Means
Kushagra’s inclusion gives India another wicketkeeping option for the final two ODIs in New Zealand. With Ishan Kishan named as vice-captain and wicketkeeper, Kushagra is expected to provide additional cover rather than being guaranteed a place in the playing XI.
The call-up offers the Jharkhand youngster valuable exposure to the international setup and an opportunity to learn alongside established Indian players.
His List A record and recent performances across formats have helped him reach this milestone. The next challenge will be to build on that progress and make the most of the opportunity if he gets a chance to represent India.
