Phillips Powers New Zealand into Super Eight with Clinical Chase vs Canada

New Zealand secured their place in the Super Eight stage of the T20 World Cup 2026 with a commanding eight-wicket victory over Canada in a high-scoring group-stage encounter.

After being put under early pressure by Canada’s impressive batting display, New Zealand responded with composure and authority, chasing down 173 in just 15.1 overs.

Samra’s Century Powers Canada to 173/4

Canada captain Dilpreet Bajwa won the toss and opted to bat first in what proved to be a bold decision. The openers laid a strong foundation, adding 100 runs for the first wicket and putting New Zealand’s bowlers on the defensive.

Yuvraj Samra was the standout performer. The 19-year-old left-hander produced a remarkable innings of 110 off 65 deliveries, striking 11 fours and six sixes. His innings combined controlled aggression with intelligent strike rotation, keeping the scoreboard moving consistently.

Bajwa contributed a steady 36 off 39 balls, allowing Samra to take the attacking role. Despite regular breakthroughs in the latter half of the innings, Canada posted a competitive total of 173 for 4 in their allotted 20 overs.

Jacob Duffy, Matt Henry, Kyle Jamieson and James Neesham picked up a wicket each for New Zealand but struggled to contain Samra during the powerplay and middle overs.

New Zealand’s Aggressive Reply Sets the Tone

Chasing 173, New Zealand approached the target with clear intent. Finn Allen injected early momentum with a quick 21 off eight balls before his dismissal.

Although both openers fell inside the powerplay, the required rate remained manageable thanks to the rapid start.

Rachin Ravindra and Glenn Phillips then took control of the chase. Ravindra compiled a composed 59 off 39 balls, anchoring the innings, while Phillips delivered the decisive blow with a powerful unbeaten 76 off just 36 deliveries.

Phillips’ calculated aggression shifted the match firmly in New Zealand’s favour. His ability to find boundaries at regular intervals ensured there was no late drama.

New Zealand eventually reached 176 for 2 in 15.1 overs, completing a comfortable chase and confirming their qualification for the Super Eight stage of the tournament.
