Mumbai Indians have appointed former India batter Robin Uthappa as their new batting coach ahead of the 2027 Indian Premier League season, as the five-time champions continue to restructure their coaching staff.
Uthappa will join head coach Kieron Pollard as part of a revamped support team announced by the franchise on October 30. The appointment marks his return to Mumbai Indians, having represented the franchise during the inaugural IPL season in 2008.
A member of India's victorious squad at the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007, Uthappa brings extensive experience from international, domestic and franchise cricket. His role will focus on improving the team's batting capabilities, supporting young players and helping the squad adapt to the tactical demands of T20 cricket.
Mumbai Indians have also appointed Mitchell McClenaghan as bowling coach, T. Dilip as fielding coach and Dhawal Kulkarni as development bowling coach.
McClenaghan previously represented Mumbai Indians between 2015 and 2020 and was part of four IPL title-winning campaigns. Dilip joins the franchise after working with the Indian men's team, while Kulkarni returns with experience from his previous association with Mumbai.
The appointments follow the departures of bowling coaches Lasith Malinga and Paras Mhambrey, along with fielding coach Carl Hopkinson. The franchise had earlier elevated Pollard to head coach, replacing Mahela Jayawardene.
The coaching changes represent a significant shift in Mumbai Indians' backroom structure ahead of the next IPL season. The franchise will look to combine the experience of its former players with the expertise of its new coaching staff as preparations for IPL 2027 gather pace.
For Uthappa, the appointment marks a new chapter with Mumbai Indians, returning to the franchise nearly two decades after his first stint as a player.
