Gqeberha was hit by heavy rain on Monday, delaying the start of play on day two of the second Test between South Africa and Australia at St George’s Park.
Persistent rain left the playing area under covers, with little sign of an immediate resumption. Cricket journalist Bharat Sundaresan reported that the conditions were worsening, with neither players nor umpires at the ground at the time of his update.
No Immediate Prospect of Play
“There’s no chance of play for at least the next three to four hours,” Sundaresan indicated, underlining the extent of the weather disruption in Gqeberha.
The ground remained covered as rain continued to fall over the stadium. Ground staff were on standby, but the conditions offered little opportunity to begin the work required to prepare the outfield for play.
Rain Delay Could Affect the Day's Schedule
The delay threatens to cut into valuable time on the second day, leaving both sides waiting for a break in the weather. In a Test match, the loss of sessions can affect teams’ plans with both bat and ball, particularly as the available time to build a lead or take wickets becomes more limited.
Ground Inspection Required Before Resumption
Even if the rain eases, a return to action will depend on the condition of the outfield and playing surface. The umpires will need to inspect the ground and determine whether it is safe to resume before a restart can be confirmed.
Weather Remains the Main Concern
For now, the weather remains the main concern at St George’s Park. The timing of any resumption will depend on how conditions develop and how quickly the ground becomes fit for play.
CricRadar will continue to follow developments in Gqeberha, including further weather updates and any official announcement on the resumption of the South Africa–Australia Test.
