Worcestershire have moved swiftly to reinforce their T20 plans, confirming the signing of Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza for the upcoming Vitality Blast campaign. The experienced all-rounder arrives as a replacement for Australian seamer Ben Dwarshuis, whose return to the county was curtailed after he secured an Indian Premier League contract.
Dwarshuis had played a significant role in last season’s competition, contributing key wickets and useful lower-order runs. His withdrawal left a gap in both balance and experience, prompting Worcestershire to seek a player capable of influencing matches across departments.
Raza Adds Experience and Versatility
While Raza is not a direct like-for-like swap for Dwarshuis, his T20 pedigree offers Worcestershire a different dimension. A middle-order batter who can also provide valuable overs with the ball, Raza has built a reputation as a dependable performer in franchise cricket around the world.
He has previously featured in England’s domestic short-format competitions and is familiar with the demands of county cricket. His availability for the full duration of the Blast provides Worcestershire with continuity — something they have lacked in recent seasons.
Speaking after the announcement, Raza expressed enthusiasm about returning to England and contributing to a side eager to re-establish itself as a contender.
Strengthening the Spin Department
Worcestershire’s overseas group also includes Pakistani leg-spinner Usama Mir, who remains part of the club’s longer-term plans. The spin resources are further bolstered by left-arm option Fateh Singh, creating a varied attack suited to English conditions in the T20 format.
Head coach Alan Richardson highlighted the importance of securing an international-quality player after Dwarshuis became unavailable. The club’s ambition, he noted, is to challenge seriously for the title after a period of inconsistency.
Aiming for a Return to Contention
Worcestershire enjoyed success in the Blast towards the end of the previous decade, lifting the trophy in 2018 and reaching the final the following year. Since then, progression beyond the early knockout stages has proved elusive.
The arrival of Raza signals intent. With greater depth and a clearer overseas structure, Worcestershire will hope the coming campaign marks a return to sustained competitiveness in one of England’s most demanding T20 tournaments.
