On This Day: Virender Sehwag Scored a Century on His Test Debut Against South Africa in 2001

November 3, 2001, became a memorable date in Indian cricket history when a young Virender Sehwag made an immediate impact on his Test debut against South Africa at Bloemfontein. Walking into a challenging situation against a formidable bowling attack, Sehwag produced a confident century that offered an early glimpse of the fearless batting style that would define his international career.

Playing his first Test at the age of 23, Sehwag scored 105 off 173 deliveries in India's first innings, striking 19 boundaries. It was an impressive performance against a South African attack featuring Shaun Pollock, Nantie Hayward, Makhaya Ntini and Jacques Kallis.

India in Trouble Before Sehwag and Tendulkar's Partnership

India, led by Sourav Ganguly, were asked to bat first in the opening Test of their 2001–02 tour of South Africa at Goodyear Park in Bloemfontein.

The hosts made an early impression with the ball. Nantie Hayward removed Shiv Sunder Das and VVS Laxman, while Shaun Pollock dismissed Rahul Dravid. Jacques Kallis then sent Ganguly back to the pavilion, leaving India struggling at 68/4.

With the top order back in the dressing room, India needed a substantial partnership to recover. Sachin Tendulkar was already at the crease, and the arrival of debutant Sehwag changed the direction of the innings.

Rather than allowing the pressure of his first Test appearance to affect him, Sehwag played with confidence and supported Tendulkar as the pair gradually took control.

A Memorable 220-Run Partnership with Sachin Tendulkar

The partnership between Tendulkar and Sehwag became the defining feature of India's first innings.

Tendulkar played a magnificent knock of 155 from 184 deliveries, while Sehwag contributed 105 from 173 balls. Their fifth-wicket partnership added 220 runs, rescuing India from a difficult position and putting the visitors back into the contest.

Sehwag reached his maiden Test century on debut, completing the milestone in 157 balls. His innings featured 19 fours and showcased the attacking instincts that would later become his trademark.

The pair's partnership was particularly important because it came after South Africa had taken four early wickets. Their recovery helped India finish the first day in a much stronger position.

Sehwag was eventually dismissed by Pollock, but his contribution had already made a lasting impression. India finished their first innings with 379 runs.

A Debut Century Despite India's Defeat

Although Sehwag's debut century gave India plenty of encouragement, the match eventually went South Africa's way.

The hosts responded with a commanding 563 in their first innings. Lance Klusener scored 108, while several other South African batters made important contributions to establish a substantial lead.

India struggled in their second innings and were dismissed for 237. Sehwag scored another 31, but the visitors could not build the partnerships needed to set a challenging target.

South Africa required just 54 runs to win and reached the target with nine wickets remaining.

Despite the defeat, Sehwag's debut performance stood out. His century had arrived against a strong bowling attack in difficult overseas conditions, making it an encouraging beginning to his Test career.

The Beginning of an Extraordinary Test Career

Sehwag's debut century was only the beginning. He went on to become one of India's most successful Test batters, finishing his career with 8,586 runs in 104 matches at an average of 49.34.

He scored 23 Test centuries and 32 half-centuries, with a highest score of 319 against South Africa in Chennai in 2008.

His fearless approach eventually made him one of the most destructive opening batters in Test cricket. Sehwag became the first Indian to score two triple-centuries in Test cricket, achieving the feat against Pakistan in 2004 and South Africa in 2008.

His ability to attack bowlers from the beginning of an innings changed how opposition teams approached India's opening batting. Even against the strongest attacks, Sehwag trusted his natural game and looked to score runs rather than simply survive.

The innings at Bloemfontein was an early indication of what was to come.
