Devdutt Padikkal produced a superb innings for India A against New Zealand A but fell agonisingly short of a double century, departing for 199 on Day 3 of the first unofficial Test at Lincoln on Monday.
The left-handed batter struck 199 off 248 balls, including 24 fours and three sixes, to lead India's recovery after a disappointing first innings.
Padikkal was given out caught behind off Zak Gibson while attempting to play a delivery down the leg side. The dismissal, just one run short of a double century, left the batter visibly disappointed as he questioned the umpire's decision before leaving the field.
Padikkal Leads India A's Fightback
India A had been bowled out for 113 in their first innings before New Zealand A responded with 317, putting the visitors under pressure.
Padikkal anchored India's second-innings recovery with a 215-run partnership alongside Sai Sudharsan, who scored 91. He continued to build the innings with Yash Rathod, who contributed 66, helping India A regain control after their difficult start.
Washington Sundar also played a valuable role, reaching an unbeaten half-century as the visitors extended their lead.
India A Establish Strong Position
India A finished Day 3 on 488/8 in their second innings, taking their overall lead to 284 runs. The turnaround put the visitors in a commanding position heading into the final day.
Although Padikkal missed out on a deserved double century, his innings proved central to India's recovery. His ability to occupy the crease for long periods and convert a start into a substantial score offered a significant boost to India A's batting effort.
The dismissal at 199 will remain a frustrating end to an outstanding knock, but Padikkal's contribution has put India A firmly in contention to dictate the closing stages of the match.
