India all-rounder Shivam Dube credited former Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni for guiding him through a challenging phase against short-pitched bowling, after producing a match-winning innings against the Netherlands in the T20 World Cup 2026.
Dube was named Player of the Match for his aggressive 66 off 31 deliveries, an effort that transformed India’s innings in Ahmedabad. Reflecting on his journey, the left-handed batter admitted that handling the short ball had once been a concern during his early years in the IPL.
Learning the Hard Way
Dube explained that he was aware of his natural strength and striking ability but needed technical and mental clarity to overcome that specific weakness. During the off-season, he focused intensely on improving his response to rising deliveries, ensuring he could remain composed rather than reactive.
He recalled a key piece of advice from Dhoni, who emphasized the importance of percentage cricket. Instead of trying to clear the ropes every time, Dhoni had encouraged him to look for safer options — rotating the strike or finding gaps — until the right ball arrived. That perspective, Dube said, helped him simplify his approach at the crease.
Turning the Game Around
India were under pressure at 74 for 3 midway through the innings. Dube shifted momentum with calculated aggression, striking boundaries with authority while maintaining control. His partnership with Hardik Pandya, who contributed 30 from 21 balls, added vital late acceleration.
Earlier, Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma provided stability in the middle overs, while the top order faced early setbacks.
Dube’s innings not only lifted India to 193 for 6 but also highlighted his growth as a finisher — a role that demands clarity under pressure. With the Super Eight stage approaching, his improved range against pace could prove crucial in tighter contests ahead.
