BCCI president Mithun Manhas has said that Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma chances of featuring in the 2027 ODI World Cup should depend on their fitness and performances rather than their age.
With the next World Cup scheduled to take place in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia in October and November 2027, the future of India's two experienced batters has become an important topic in discussions about the team's preparations.
Speaking to Sportstar, Manhas clarified that the final decision on player selection rests with the national selectors and coaching staff. However, he believes age should not prevent an in-form and fully fit cricketer from representing India.
"Fitness and performance should be the criteria for selection, definitely not age," Manhas said.
He added that any player who remains fit, performs consistently and contributes to winning matches should be considered for selection.
Experience Could Help Shubman Gill
Manhas also highlighted the importance of experienced players in supporting India's ODI captain Shubman Gill as he prepares for his first World Cup campaign as captain.
According to the BCCI president, the presence of senior players such as Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya could provide valuable support to Gill in managing the team's responsibilities during major tournaments.
He also pointed to Jasprit Bumrah's leadership within the bowling group and suggested that responsibilities could be shared among experienced players.
Manhas believes that the experience of senior cricketers in handling pressure situations can make a difference in important matches.
Kohli and Rohit Remain in World Cup Conversation
Both Kohli and Rohit have retired from T20I and Test cricket, leaving ODI cricket as their remaining international format.
Their performances in the 50-over format will remain an important part of India's preparations for the 2027 tournament. However, Manhas did not confirm their places in the World Cup squad or make any selection guarantees.
The final decision will depend on the selectors and coaching staff, with fitness, consistency and contributions to the team expected to remain central to the selection process.
India's World Cup plans will continue to develop over the coming months as the team prepares for the next major challenge in international cricket.
