Australian all-rounder Cameron Green attracted massive attention at the IPL 2026 auction after Kolkata Knight Riders secured his services for a staggering ₹25.20 crore. However, despite the aggressive bidding war, Green will not receive the full amount due to a specific salary cap regulation enforced by the IPL governing body.

Green did not feature in the 2025 IPL season as he was recovering from a back injury, but his value in the auction room remained extremely high. Franchises showed strong confidence in his long-term potential as a pace-bowling all-rounder capable of contributing in all phases of the game.

IPL Salary Cap Rule Explained

Under IPL auction regulations, the final salary for an overseas player at a mini auction is restricted by a predefined limit. This limit is determined by the lower value between the highest retention bracket and the highest price paid at the previous mega auction.

For the 2026 season, the top retention slab stands at ₹18 crore. Although the highest price at the last mega auction crossed this figure, the rule ensures that overseas players cannot earn more than the retention ceiling during a mini auction. As a result, Green’s actual earnings will be capped at ₹18 crore, regardless of the bidding figure.

How the Bidding Unfolded

Green entered the auction with a base price of ₹2 crore. Kolkata Knight Riders joined the contest early and soon found themselves in a fierce three-way battle involving Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings. The intense bidding rapidly escalated before KKR emerged victorious at ₹25.20 crore.

Cameron Green’s IPL Record

The Australian all-rounder has previously represented two franchises in the league. He made his IPL debut with Mumbai Indians before moving to Royal Challengers Bengaluru the following season. Across 29 IPL matches, Green has scored over 700 runs and claimed 16 wickets, showcasing his value as a dual-skilled player despite operating in high-pressure situations.

What This Means for KKR

While Kolkata Knight Riders will benefit from securing a marquee overseas all-rounder at a regulated salary, the move also highlights the strategic importance of understanding auction rules. Green’s inclusion strengthens KKR’s balance and provides depth ahead of the 2026 campaign.

The auction outcome serves as a reminder that headline prices do not always reflect final player earnings under IPL regulations.
